Local life: A weekend in Wagga

Local life: A weekend in Wagga

For the second time in as many weeks, Adam and I have had house guests.  This time it was Adam’s second cousin Joe, who’s recently relocated to Australia. Joe’s had one brief visit to Wagga Wagga before, but Adam and I were keen to show him what life was like here for a pair of young professionals.

So over the course of two days, we handpicked some of our favourite places and showed Joe what a typical weekend in Wagga might involve…

The return of golden hour

The return of golden hour

One of the lovely things about Australia is the abundance of light.  The sun shines long and hard here.  While its rays are often overwhelming in the dead of summer and feeble in the heart of winter, during spring and autumn at certain times of the day. they cast the most wonderful warm glow over the countryside.

Instead of a rapid descent from light to dark at the end of the day, that wonderful ‘golden hour’ has started to arrive…

Daily delights

Daily delights

Perhaps it’s the warmer sunny days, the clean sheets I snuggled into last night or the fact I’ve got a three day weekend coming up, but life’s felt really cheery this week.

Every few months I like to take some time out to reflect upon the little things that make me smile (here’s my musings from July and February), so to mark the start of spring, I thought I’d share my current daily delights with you…

Wattle time

Wattle time

I’ve always been a bit of a scavenger.  Ever since I was a kid I’d pocket pretty shells, inspect interesting leaves or steal stems from the garden.  It’s a habit that I’ve maintained into adulthood and I love taking a wander a somewhere, just to see what I can find.

The Malvern Hills were literally a five minute walk from our house in England and I loved the freedom of having a wander through woodland, often coming home with a pine cone, pebble, or in the spring, wild garlic.

Now the weather’s starting to warm up in Australia, I’ve been spending a little bit more time outdoors and the other day I spotted the first of the wattle starting to bloom… Continue reading “Wattle time”

Winter weed, winter feed

Winter weed, winter feed

One morning last week a pair of ducks appeared on our nature strip. Just the two of them, sticking close by each other, happily nibbling on the clover patches that have emerged over winter. I smiled to myself, noted how cute they looked and thought nothing more of it.

A day or so later, I saw the same ducks again – this time across the street in another yard. Now, I see them most mornings and I’ve named them our neighbourhood ducks…

Local life: A weekend in Beechworth

Local life: A weekend in Beechworth

I found myself with an unexpected three day weekend last week on account on working some overtime. It couldn’t have come at a better time really. Both Adam and I were at the tail end of an exceptionally busy couple of weeks at work and we’d both just recovered from head-colds. Instead of hunkering down at home for a few days, we decided to make the most of the bonus day and treat ourselves to a long-weekend away.

I found a lovely bed and breakfast in Beechworth, Victoria – a charming, historic town about two hours drive from Wagga Wagga.  We made a reservation, and on Friday we headed south…

Reasons to smile

Reasons to smile

It’s been a very quiet couple of days in our household, on account of a long working week for me (I’m on day seven and cannot wait for the weekend!) and some troublesome, emerging wisdom teeth for Adam.

When the monotony of the work-eat-sleep schedule gets me down I try really hard to be aware of all the ‘little things’ in my life that bring me joy every single day. It’s a nice way to take stock and remember, that there is beauty and wonder all around us.

So, here are three things making me smile this week…
