Australia is blessed with big open skies that somehow manage to be filled with expression every single day. In this last week, Wagga Wagga has seen huge variations in the temperature and I’m not sure if it’s related, but as a result we’ve been seeing the most amazing sunsets…
The colours have been mind-blowing. Everything from vivid pinks and purples, to the most intense oranges and yellows and even deep, brooding indigo blue. For the last few days, from around 8pm to 8:30pm there’s been this magic show in the sky.
I’ve found myself getting excited for sunset every night, wondering what display I’ll see. I’ve been doing silly little things, like making sure dinner is cleaned up and had a shower, so I can truly just appreciate what’s happening before my eyes. Often the colours and the shapes of the clouds move quickly, resulting in a consistently changing show. You think the sky can’t get any more beautiful, and then the sun lowers slightly and it’s like a masterpiece before your eyes.
The colours we see at sunset are due to ‘scattering’ – which happens when a beam of light hits a molecule in the atmosphere. It sends the light’s wavelengths off in all different directions. I’ve also learnt in the last few days, there are a few signs you can look out for, which may give an indication of whether you’re bound to see a spectacular sunset.
I’ve found it amazing as well, how quickly the colours disappear from the sky once the sun’s gone beyond the horizon. It’s almost as if that amazing display you just witnessed was too good to be true. A dream almost. Lucky we’ve got photographs right?!
What have sunsets been looking like at your place this week? – I’d love for you to share your skies with me too.
Have a wonderful weekend. x
