What’s making me happy: August

What’s making me happy: August

August always seems like such a fickle month.  Reminding you one day, that it’s still winter (cue lashing rain and wind) and then teasing you the next with sunny skies, and just a hint of warm breeze.  A month where you know you’ll be wearing your winter woollies most days, but you keep on seeing pretty, floral dresses and daydreaming of bare legs.  A month where you make sure you get your fill of stodgy cold weather stews and casseroles, so you’re ready for the salad.

This is what’s been making me smile this month…

The week that was

The week that was

How’s isolation life treating you?  I find have days where I enjoy being within in the confines of four walls – warm, content and protected from the outside world.  Other days I feel claustrophobic and yearn for normality and the ability to just go and do as I please.   It is what it is though and like all challenging situations I know this too will pass.

Here’s how my last seven days have looked…

What’s making me happy: February

What’s making me happy: February

It’s been a quiet month so far in our household due to Adam travelling extensively for work and the entire family sharing a rather nasty summer cold.  As a result we’ve not ventured too far these last few weeks, so much of what’s made me smile this month has related to simply being at home…

In this month of contrasts, this is what’s been making me smile…

What’s making me happy: July

What’s making me happy: July

I often think July feels like one of the longest months of the year, mainly because it’s smack bang in the middle of winter when the days are short and everyone has well and truly settled into hibernation mode – preferring the cosy comfort of home.

In the midst of this season of winter, I’m still finding plenty to smile about though…

The evening water

The evening water

Daylight saving or ‘summer time’ arrived in our part of Australia the other week and with it came the start of gloriously long, light evenings.

It’s given me a renewed energy for the warm weather ahead and instead of coming home from work feeling tired and ready to hunker down for the evening,  I find myself wanting to potter about and get little jobs done, so they’re not eating into my precious days off.

One job though, I’m finding less of a chore and more of a wonderful little ritual…

Going potty

Going potty

Over the last few years I’ve developed a deep affection for having a garden.   In my younger days, it was a hassle – something that took up precious weekend time, but now I thoroughly enjoy watering, weeding and getting a bit of dirt under my fingernails.

Adam and I had a rambling cottage garden in the U.K., complete with terrace vegetable patch. I desperately wanted to replicate our bags of potatoes and pots of peas, tomatoes and lettuces this spring, but the timing of our trip back to England for our wedding, meant it just wasn’t feasible and we’d miss picking the fruits of our labours.

In a bid to satisfy my earthen cravings, I’ve compromised and decided this spring I’m going potty…
