The warm weather wardrobe

The warm weather wardrobe

It’s been an obscenely hot few weeks here in Wagga Wagga.  I’m talking record breaking temperatures, day after day after day after day.  It might be tolerable if you’re staying in some five star resort, full of palm tree surrounded pools and can laze around in a pair of swimmers all day.  But, when you’ve got to carry on with normal working life, knowing how to dress everyday can be tough.

If I had to pick a ‘uniform’, it’d be jeans and a top – lightweight in summer, heavier in the winter.  It’s what I feel most comfortable in, but jeans aren’t the most practical option during Australia’s long summers.  A few weeks back, faced with the prospect of a work day outside in the heat, I took a punt on a new item of clothing.  It’s been my saviour this January…

The Nimmie-Caira

The Nimmie-Caira

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel to an 86,000 hectare wetland in western New South Wales, on assignment with a colleague at work.  The Nimmie-Caira is a vast area of floodplain that was formerly farmed, at the very end of the Murrumbidgee River system.  Its restoration back to  a natural wetland is a divisive project under Australia’s controversial Murray Darling Basin Plan.

Personal politics aside (there are both supporters and detractors of the project), it was was an amazing day I wanted to share with you a little part of the country that often gets forgotten… Continue reading “The Nimmie-Caira”

Spirit of the Land

Spirit of the Land

This weekend past Adam and I went on a fact-finding mission.  Adam’s recently become involved in a project that will see him oversee a tour of an inclusive, disability friendly stage to a number of festivals around region next year.  One of the events the stage will feature at is Lockhart’s Spirit of the Land festival.  So to get a better understanding of the festival and scope out potential locations for the stage, we decided to go along and check it out for ourselves…

Local life: A weekend in Wagga

Local life: A weekend in Wagga

For the second time in as many weeks, Adam and I have had house guests.  This time it was Adam’s second cousin Joe, who’s recently relocated to Australia. Joe’s had one brief visit to Wagga Wagga before, but Adam and I were keen to show him what life was like here for a pair of young professionals.

So over the course of two days, we handpicked some of our favourite places and showed Joe what a typical weekend in Wagga might involve…

The return of golden hour

The return of golden hour

One of the lovely things about Australia is the abundance of light.  The sun shines long and hard here.  While its rays are often overwhelming in the dead of summer and feeble in the heart of winter, during spring and autumn at certain times of the day. they cast the most wonderful warm glow over the countryside.

Instead of a rapid descent from light to dark at the end of the day, that wonderful ‘golden hour’ has started to arrive…

The alternative hen

The alternative hen

Ever since I got engaged, I’ve maintained I’m fairly clueless bride-to-be. I never really dreamed about my wedding day and although Adam and I are really enjoying putting together a day of celebration for family and friends, we’re trying to make it a low-key, intimate affair.

So when it came to discussing a ‘hens party’ I was completely stuck.  I definitely wasn’t keen on a boozy night with a heap of friends.  Thankfully my sole bridesmaid knows me very well and suggested a night away.  So this past weekend we headed south to wine country…

The Everlane experience

The Everlane experience

A couple of years ago I became aware of the American brand, Everlane.  It prides itself on being an ‘ethical retailer’, by sourcing its clothes from factories that environmentally sound with good pay and conditions for workers.  Everlane also says it abolishes the traditional retail mark-up, so you’re able to get a better understanding of the true value of your garment.  It’s a refreshing ethos and the brand’s simple designs in classic colours are super appealing in this age of fast fashion in saturated palettes.

After months of stalking Everlane’s website I signed up for an account earlier this year and my first order arrived a few of weeks ago…

Local life: Rabbit Books

Local life: Rabbit Books

Wagga Wagga is home to a plethora of little, independent businesses which is one of the things I really love about the city.

A new bookshop/art studio/coffee shop/cocktail bar opened up in the CBD a few months back and although I’d stuck my head in for a quick peek, I’d never taken the time to have a proper visit.  So over the weekend, Adam and I headed to Rabbit Books for a coffee date…
