A long weekend in Melbourne

Flinders Street Station, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at night.

Long weekends are always lovely, but especially so when there are an extra few days off thrown in, they contain a trip away and feature old friends.

Melbourne well and truly delivered in the mini-break stakes for Adam and I and if you’re interested, this is how it looked…

WHERE WE STAYED

The weekend away centred on catching up with Tasmanian friends, Larry and James. Melbourne is roughly the halfway point for both us, so it made sense to centre our rendezvous there.  We found a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment on Airbnb, a short walk from Melbourne’s Southbank, which split between the two couples was very reasonably priced.  It had these quirky porthole windows in the bedrooms and some stunning views of the city skyline. The location was fantastic – an easy drive off the highway and right on a tram line. I’d seriously consider staying there again next time I’m in the city.

WHAT WE DID

None of us had any specific plans for our time away – which was actually really nice.  We just ended up where each day took us, not cramming too much in and making sure we could fit in afternoon naps. One day we spent time along Southbank and in the CBD shopping and soaking up the hustle and bustle of the city, looking it’s autumnal best. On another day we had a morning out at the Queen Victoria Markets eyeing beautiful cheeses, fruit and vegetables and flowers.  There was also an excursion out to St Kilda, where we saw Port Phillip Bay looking like glass.

WHERE WE ATE

Melbourne is undeniably the foodie capital of Australia, so much of our time was spent sampling what the city had to offer. We brunched in Degraves Street, at a Spanish style café and in a bustling Italian eatery not far from our accommodation.  There were dinners from a Japanese fusion restaurant, a multi-storied Chinese restaurant and a busy Malaysian eatery with countless coffees, snacks and treats in between.  Whenever Adam and I visit Melbourne we try and visit new cafés and restaurants, inevitably though we run out of meals, never having visited everywhere on our ‘must eat’ list. It’s a good excuse to keep returning ;).

Even though it was only a few days away, it felt like a proper little break and it was so lovely to spend a few days with Larry and James. I definitely think Adam and I need to sneak in another long, long weekend away before baby arrives – recommendations, as always, are very welcome!

Have a wonderful weekend. x
